Ladies and gentlemen, I present you with the Samsung 950 PRO SSDIt's an M.2 form-factor SSD designed for use on PCIe 3.0 x4 (rated for up to 32Gb/s) with NVMe 1.1. If you decide to buy one for your desktop and need to get an adapter, make sure it is PCIe 3.0 x4 not x2 (which is for "old" M.2 SSDs)

The 512GB version is rated for an insane 2,500MB/s read and 1,500MB/s write. The price you ask? Only $300 bucks. The read speed is literally 10 times as fast as my SATA 6.0Gbps SSD (not to mension my internal HDD stuck on a 3.0Gbps slot...or my external USB3 HDD that for whatever reason doesn't support eSATA). User benchmarks confirm that on average these are the actual SSD speeds (although the variance between SSDs can be in the hundreds of MBs. i.e. one person got read speeds of 2,600MB/s whereas another got only 2,200MB/s)

Users have also noted that this SSD runs a bit on the hot side (one person reported 44oC at idle and 60oC when benchmarking. As a result, if you are using a desktop, it is best to place this where the SSD is exposed to atleast one case fan. It would also be worthwhile to consider installing memory heatsinks on the SSD if you have the space.(the same user I mentioned above found a 10oC decrease in temperature after installing memory heatsinks and exposing the SSD to a 1200rpm case fan)

So what do you think? Anybody else feel like their "fancy" SATA3 SSD is a dinosaur now?

This is something I'm still researching. People say their games load lightning fast but I have yet to find a review or post where people actually provide specifics on this matter.

In my case the 512GB 950 PRO theoretically would load Skyrim over 10 times faster than my SATA3 SSD. (assuming I had a slot for this in my laptop and that my 4 year old mobo, my 1600MHz DDR3 RAM, and my 770M GPU could all keep up with the SSD)

I was eyeing the 256GB version when i bought the new hardware(CPU,MB,RAM) but i couldn't fit it in the budget since i took a personal bank load to get the new stuff and now you relighted that spark. But now I'm as usual broke as hell, but one day, one day...

You might be better off with a 2TB of 4TB WD Black HD for gaming. If you do not have anything else on the HD but games (NO Windows files) - it is almost as fast. And if you spend a little time on defrag, you will be between 200Mbps and 275Mbps. Even faster on the 6TB WD Black model. Might take a "bit" longer to install the game, but reads are still really, really fast. Big smile

This is something I'm still researching. People say their games load lightning fast but I have yet to find a review or post where people actually provide specifics on this matter.........

For games it may or may not make much of a difference. For loading windows .....Night and day for sure, but gaming - like I said it depends what else you have an the disk.

This is my 4TB Black with 3.2TBs of games  on it.

I still have some fragments and I am over 220 Mbps read. Not bad at all for gaming

I'm personally waiting for whatever Intel does after the 11nm processors to upgrade to a desktop full-tower...although college may make using a desktop unfeasible...

Damn that desktop HDD is almost as fast as my old SSD. Btw, its MBps not Mbps. Mb is megabits, MB is megabytes. There are 8 Megabits per Megabyte. 220MB/s is impressive, 220Mb/s (which is ~27MB/s) is dismal even for HDDs.

Dang Rotten that is insanely fast. Have you noticed any heat issues? I read a few reviews where folks complained it got really hot when in heavy use (although that may have been for the 512GB version)

Also, do you remember the loading times (specifically for Skyrim/Perfectly Modded Skyrim) when you were using a previous HDD or SSD that we could use to compare? I think that could be incredibly helpful information for people trying to determine if it is worthy investment for use with Skyrim.

Never got around to getting software that can monitor the temperature of the M.2, speedfan(even the latest beta) doesn't see it.

Not to worry.
Possibly a m.2 device might get warm while doing a stress test.
But in any normal or even any usage scenario there will be no issue.

Ok got HWinfo and i run two games simultaneously of the M.2 (Anno 2205 because it puts some strain on HDD/SSD/M.2 as far as i know when loading diffrent assets and it runs in the background and Skyrim perfectly modded V4.2) and let them run for 20 min it's only +15C hotter then the unused ones.

2500MB/s SSDs?! Cel

https://2img.net/h/s32.postimg.cc/dbq4tvt39/cel.png (if you want better zoom)

From what i've tested it so far loading times in all games are at least 2x faster.
In regards to SPM V4.2 it's a little more than 2x and some areas load instantly sometimes, 2-3 sec for other interiors.

Hope this covers it and i don't think there's any reason to fear the temps...at least not with the 256GB one.

I know this post is old but figure i chime in here also. Ive ran skyrim on ssds and regular WD 7200 RPM drives and for me personally, only difference i see is in load times. Actual in game theres rly no difference. I even moved my heavly moddedFallout 4 onto my regular HD and gameplay in game is exact same on SSDs minus that first intial load when u first start the game.

I also ran 2 ssds in raid before with skyrim and still didnt notice a increased performance, not saying there isnt one outside of load times but just what ive seen myself. Forgot where i read it but someone did some testing and once ur in a game even a 5200 RPM regular drive is enough to play a game smoothly. So if load times are to long for u then ya id say go ssd or the m.2 type but i wouldnt really say its a must have to enjoy these games.
